Every cancer patient looks for the most reliable, effective, and gentle treatment. One of the most suitable options is proton therapy - a precise and gentle cancer treatment with minimal side effects. Proton therapy is a type of radiotherapy that precisely targets the tumor delivering the dose necessary for its destruction, while minimizing irradiation and damage to surrounding healthy tissues and organs.

The number of health insurance companies who offer proton therapy to their policyholders is steadily increasing. In fact, proton therapy is the most effective and appropriate method not only for the patient, who will have fewer adverse long-term side effects compared to undergoing traditional radiotherapy, but also for the health care system, which will have less financial burden in the long run.

A great example is Všeobecná Zdravotná Poisťovňa (VšZP), a Slovak health insurance company who has been covering treatment at the Proton Therapy Center in Prague for their policyholders since 2013.

"It is extremely important for us to provide our policyholders with affordable and high-quality treatment. That is why we are actively looking for opportunities to cooperate with renowned foreign workplaces that guarantee it," says Beata Havelková, Vice-Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of VšZP.

"The goal of modern oncology treatment is to provide patients with the maximum chance of cure while minimizing side effects. Proton therapy offers this advantage. It has excellent results and is more gentle, because it can reduce the load of surrounding tissues and organs by unwanted radiation, and thus eliminate the risk of complications associated with treatment. So far, we have approved proton treatment for more than 350 adults and children," says Richard Strapko, CEO of VšZP.

Proton therapy abroad is operatively approved by VšZP to all those who meet the indication criteria and conditions set by law. If you would like to learn more about the process to undergo proton therapy as a VšZP policyholder, please visit their website.
